FAQ

What the hell is Dr. Sketchy's?

Dr. Sketchy's Anti-Art School is an event founded by artist Molly Crabapple in 2005 in NYC. Disillusioned by the traditional format of figure drawing classes, where students or artists sit in silence drawing nude models that simply stand there under unflattering florescent lights, Molly came up with a revolutionary idea: make this age-old creative exercise into something awesome and daring. Now, more than 5 years later, Dr. Sketchy's has branches in over 100 locations ALL OVER THE WORLD, inspiring artists and doodlers alike in a unique and social experience. The Northampton, MA branch has been running since June 2010 and has only gotten better and better each month!
Dr. Sketchy's Northampton currently meets every first Friday of the month at the Elevens on Pleasant St. from 7:30-10 pm.

Yeah, but like, what IS IT?

Here's what to expect when walking into our particular event (which is monthly, on First Fridays): On the stage, we've got two or more models performing creative poses, who hold still for 2-15 minutes at a time. The models are deliciously costumed in burlesque-inspired attire or something sexy that fits the theme of the month. The poses can range from pin-up to low-brow grotesque, but always with a wink. There's no full nudity, though we may get pretty damn close. Also onstage are props for the theme that add to the display and which the models can use in poses (for example - a huge candy cane, a marshmallow brain, a bullwhip - it can be anything!). Below the stage on the floor there's chairs and a few tables, a couch, and other seating for attendees. As an attendee, you might be a professional artist, or just someone who likes to doodle. We don't judge your work and there's no actual 'teaching' involved, it's just an open social format for creative inspiration! Then there's the bar (very important!), so feel free to enjoy your gin 'n' tonic while drawing. We also have music, either dj'd or by a live band, making Dr. Sketchy's a full sensory experience. On occasion we'll make handmade edible goodies free to the first 30-40 guests, and every event there are 2 fun drawing contests with prizes for the top 3 winners (models choose)from our awesome local sponsors. Each session is about two hours long with a 15 min break in the middle, and after our event there's a fabulous 80's Dance Party for those who stick around!
The best way to see what we're about is by going to an event, but scroll through this blog for photos from our previous sessions, and check out our Facebook (click on the box left) and the hub site at drsketchy.com.

Is it open to just anybody?

Yes and no. You certainly don't have to be an artist to enjoy a Dr. Sketchy's event, but we do have some ground rules. First, we're in a bar/nightclub, so you must be 21+ to attend (IDs checked). We also don't allow folks to bring cameras or take pictures with their phones unless it's been previously cleared with us - if you're a photographer and interested in snapping photos, email me or find us on FB; we can only have 1 photographer at a time. Lastly, no skeezballs allowed. When we have live performers or bands we allow people to come and just watch the show, they don't necessarily have to draw. But you do anything leery or uncouth, we're kicking you out on your pervy ass. Them's the rules.

What should I bring?

Drawing supplies are a good start: paper/sketchbook, pencils, pens, charcoal, pastels, small watercolor kits, a drawing board if you like, whatever floats your boat. Acrylics and oil paints are too messy and hazardous though, so you can leave those at home. We also strongly suggest bringing a booklight. Our venue is awesome but when the stage is lit, the floorspace is really dark. If you want to see what you're doing, you can pick up a booklight for a buck or two and bring with.
ID, cover charge (will be displayed on the event listing/posters/FB page that month), and friends!!!

What if I'm late...can I still get in?

Absolutely. You can come in and out as you please, and arrive at any time. We charge the full cover for anybody that comes in though, until the last ten minutes or so. But, if you're late it may be difficult to find a seat - the best ones go fast, though there's usually room right up front on the floor. And if you leave early, you're gonna miss out on the righteous last contest and poses, so I wouldn't recommend it.

How can I become a model for Dr. Sketchy's Northampton?

We always have an open call for models here, though we may not necessarily be able to use everyone that inquires. If you're interested, email me at drsketchynoha@gmail.com with your info/availability/photo. We love models of all body shapes, colors, and styles, and are particularly interested in booking males and folks that fall under the queer category - also, it helps if you've got something unique to offer. Maybe you're a dancer or a drag queen or have a bounty of neat costumes in your closet. We want it all! Models are paid well but I'll remind you that it's not as easy as it looks to stand still for 10 minutes with your body contorted into a pose, and that you really must be confident in your body and self to do this.

I'm too shy to model but I'd love to be involved somehow!

The good Doctor is always looking for more volunteer art monkeys. If you've got something you'd like to bring to the table, be it seamstress experience, a local band, theatrical makeup prowess, the gift of promotional gab, or items you'd like to donate as props, prizes, or snacks, bring it on!!! You'll receive free admission to Dr. Sketchy's in return and a whole lotta love.

I've already attended one or more of your events, and want to show off the sweet-ass work I did there. Can you post my artwork on your sites?

Totally - email photos or scans (jpeg) of your work, name, and website if you have one to drsketchynoha@gmail.com and we'll put your stuff up on the blog and Facebook, and maybe even on the hub site, which gets THOUSANDS of views per day!

My small business might be interested in sponsoring Dr. Sketchy's. How does that work?

We adore our Sketchy sponsors. They donate prizes or skills to us in return for the unique advertising our event affords - so first, is your product or service something that our audience would be interested in? Our current sponsors donate a wide variety of things including: wild hair styling for the models, adult toys, graphic novels and tee-shirts, handmade hats, and tattoo/piercing gift certificates. Those who attend our events range from 21 to 60+, including hip kids, moms, seasoned artists and everything in between. We're always interested in working with new sponsors - just contact us at drsketchynoha@gmail.com and we'll send you a more thorough write-up of what's involved and how your business can gain from working with us.

Dr. Sketchy's Northampton Cracked the Nut!

December's session featured a saucy toy soldier and snowflake ballerina modeling their little hearts out to the sounds of totally decent christmas punk and indie songs and the scratching of pencil to paper. Our tattoo yourself or someone else (making friends!) contest was particularly hilarious, and contest winners were treated to awesome goodies from our sponsors: the artists at Lucky's Tattoo and Piercing - who donated a $50 gift certificate, topatoco.com - who donated a sweet Bake'n'Bake apron and a hilarious book of comics by Kate Beaton, Oh My! Sensuality Shop - donating their signature classy and not-so-classy adult toys, and mymonsterhat.com - with some adorable handmade finger puppets and a snowmonster hat. And, thanks also to Chameleons Salon, who did our ballerina's hair up in a blizzard of sparkles, feathers, snowflakes, and other craziness. Thanks to everyone who came, and as always, my wonderful art monkeys for their help!

New Sponsors!

Baby Tattoo Books is an LA-based company that sponsors Dr. Sketchy's as a whole and puts out sweet art books and graphic novels. Check 'em out at babytattoo.com

topatoco.com is a really cool local business that sells shirts, art, comics, tote bags and other fun crap; many of the products by fine fine local artists and illustrators, and we're really glad to have them on board. Last month Dr. Sketchy's Noho contest winners enjoyed a fabulous book by illustrator Kate Beaton (jealous!) and a Bake 'n' bake apron from topatoco. Can't wait to see what they out with next!

And as always, we are so grateful to our sponsors, who make Dr. Sketchy's just that much cooler. Please check all 'dem out, they're guaranteed to be good things.

Next week we'll have pictures up of our December session, which was chock full of randy holiday spirit and elicited some seriously excellent drawings from our attendees. Hope to see y'all Friday, January 7th for our super-fantastic Pajama Party at the Elevens!
